3.31.2026

Illinois College has appointed Amanda Schuster, PhD, RN, as director of nursing, bringing experienced leadership to a growing program with a 100% placement rate, preparing students for high-impact careers in healthcare.

Her appointment comes as the College expands its investment in career-ready learning to meet the rising demand for skilled nurses in our region. With newly renovated nursing facilities, including advanced simulation labs and collaborative clinical learning spaces, IC offers students the opportunity to begin hands-on training early and build confidence before entering the field.

“At Illinois College, our focus is on preparing students not just to graduate, but to make an immediate impact in their professions,” said Dean of Faculty Dane Wendell. “Amanda brings a strong record as a nurse educator and program leader, with a clear focus on student learning and clinical readiness. We’re looking forward to the leadership and consistency she will bring to the nursing program.”

For prospective students, her leadership signals continued momentum in a program built on personalized attention, experiential learning, and strong clinical preparation. Illinois College nursing students benefit from direct admission to the program, the potential for free tuition and early access to skills training in advanced simulation labs. They gain experience across multiple specialities to ensure they Graduate READY to launch their career.

Schuster earned her Ph.D. in Nursing Education from the University of Northern Colorado in 2024, along with a Master of Science in Nursing from Fort Hays State University and bachelor’s degrees in nursing and biology. Her academic work and leadership roles have centered on strengthening curriculum, aligning programs with national standards, and supporting student success — all priorities that align with Illinois College’s commitment to preparing graduates for meaningful careers.

A registered nurse in Kansas, Schuster brings a strong background in nursing education, clinical instruction, and academic program leadership. She most recently served at Baker University’s School of Nursing and previously taught at Benedictine College. Earlier in her career, she practiced in acute care as a surgical intensive care nurse and relief charge nurse at the University of Kansas Hospital, experiences that continue to shape her approach to preparing students for real-world clinical environments. She joins the exceptional faculty currently teaching, mentoring and coaching in nursing at Illinois College.

Through programs like Advantage Plus, Illinois College ensures that students Graduate READY, equipped with the knowledge, experience and professional skills needed to succeed in competitive healthcare environments. Additionally, nursing students may qualify for full-tuition scholarships through the College’s partnership with Memorial Health. Under Schuster’s leadership, the nursing program will continue to emphasize hands-on learning across many specializations, clear pathways to licensure and building community that helps students thrive.

Students interested in pursuing nursing at Illinois College can expect a program grounded in both academic rigor and real-world application, preparing them to meet the evolving needs of patients and communities.

Illinois College expands nursing program facilities through transformative renovation

Illinois College expands nursing program facilities through transformative renovation

emily.titsworth

Fri, 03/06/2026 - 09:06

3.06.2026

Illinois College is expanding its nursing program so the next generation of healthcare professionals can step forward to meet the region’s nursing shortage.

Students preparing to become nurses at Illinois College now train in environments that mirror the hospitals and clinics they will soon serve. Nursing majors practice delivering babies, caring for children, responding to emergencies and managing complex health care situations utilizing cutting-edge simulation systems and virtual reality technology. These experiences strengthen critical thinking and build the confidence students need before entering real clinical settings.

The newly designed space also includes collaborative learning areas that encourage teamwork, problem-solving and idea-sharing among students. From their sophomore year, nursing majors begin developing hands-on clinical skills, working in teams and learning alongside faculty mentors.

Expanded facilities at Illinois College mean the program is growing and qualified students can start courses without waiting for an open seat, a common barrier at many colleges and universities.

The project was made possible in part through Illinois College’s sustained partnership with Memorial Health. As part of the IC+MH academic initiative announced in June 2023, a $4.2 million grant also provides free tuition for qualified students.

“This investment is about preparing the next generation of nurses our communities urgently need,” said Stephanie Chipman, vice president of external relations. “Students at Illinois College gain hands-on experience early in their education so they Graduate READY to step confidently into the workforce and make a difference in people’s lives.”

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, careers for registered nurses are expected to grow faster than average — 6% from 2022 to 2032. The average annual salary for a registered nurse with a bachelor’s degree is $81,220 per year. Illinois College nursing alumni have a nearly 100% placement rate after graduation working as nurses in a variety of settings, including hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, outpatient settings, clinics, insurance companies and schools across central Illinois.

1.19.2026

Illinois College’s international reputation for inspiring achievement and empowering students to make a difference in the world was celebrated this week as the College formally received a Gold Medal of Excellence for its award-winning orchid conservation exhibit from the Royal Horticultural Society.

 <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/highlights_large/public/2026-01/Naples%20event%20%284%29_0.png?h=ce652d45&itok=TI8iYpsH" width="1201" height="620" alt="President Barbara A.

(Pictured: John Parke Wright IV Chair, Orchid Conservation Chelsea, President Barbara A. Farley, Professor Lawrence Zettler, Hitchcock Professor of Biology and Scientific Chair of Orchid Conservation Chelsea)

While the honor was awarded at the 2025 Chelsea Flower Show in London, the official medal presentation took place in Florida this week, bringing together institutional leaders and research partners to mark the achievement.

For Illinois College, the gold medal represents far more than a single exhibition honor. It reflects decades of faculty-led research that places undergraduate students at the center of discovery. Under Hitchcock Professor of Biology Lawrence Zettler’s guidance, IC students have participated in cutting-edge orchid conservation research, from laboratory-based seed germination studies to international fieldwork and collaboration with leading botanical institutions. Since 2022, students have traveled to London to help present research findings at the Chelsea Flower Show, gaining rare exposure to global scientific communities while contributing directly to conservation efforts. IC faculty and students will return to the Chelsea Flower Show in May for the fifth year in a row.

This opportunity for real-world research has become a hallmark of the Illinois College experience. Students working on research projects are not only learning scientific techniques, but also building professional networks, presenting alongside experts and seeing their work contribute to addressing pressing global issues. Many alumni of the orchid research program have gone on to graduate study and research careers, carrying forward skills and confidence developed through these early opportunities.

“Presenting at the Chelsea Flower Show strengthened core skills like communication, adaptability and teamwork,” Syndi Maggart ’26 says, “Working on our exhibit allowed me to exchange ideas, solve problems and learn from experts. The relationships built during the trip have already led to opportunities for future collaboration and research.”

The exhibit, “From Hong Kong to Australia: The Orchids of Asia and the Pacific,” was developed through a longstanding partnership between Illinois College, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Naples Botanical Garden, and the University of Florida. Rare and endangered orchids across Asia and the Pacific were highlighted alongside innovative conservation research carried out by IC and partners.

On Tuesday, January 13, leaders from each collaborating institution gathered at Naples Botanical Garden, where Barbara A. Farley, president of Illinois College, and Zettler were presented with the awards.

This award underscores the strength of Illinois College’s student–faculty research model and its global reach. As the College looks ahead to its bicentennial in 2029, the recognition serves as a reminder that meaningful undergraduate research rooted in mentorship, collaboration and curiosity can resonate far beyond the Hilltop.

12.17.2025

Illinois College welcomed Olivia Dobbs Flores ’20 as director of alumni engagement in early December.

Flores joins the Office of Advancement and Alumni Engagement as Illinois College begins an exciting countdown to its bicentennial in 2029, a historic milestone that will celebrate the College’s enduring traditions and the alumni connections that continue to shape life on the Hilltop.

She brings a love for her alma mater, deep connections throughout the IC community and the skills she has gained professionally in her career.

“I am eager to bring my experience and passion for connection back to the College,” Flores said. “The chance to return and help strengthen those same lifelong bonds for other alumni truly feels like coming full circle.”

Since graduating, Flores has worked for companies like Enterprise and Zillow in client services, operations and management. These experiences have helped her cultivate expertise in data analysis, customer relations, problem-solving and communications. The combination of skills and adaptability made her the ideal candidate according to Katie Carls, executive director of advancement and alumni engagement.

“Olivia brings a unique perspective and a relationship-first approach that will help more people engage with IC in personal and meaningful ways,” Carls said. “Her experience, creativity and energy is exactly what this role needs, and she is a perfect addition to our established team.”

Flores will lead engagement efforts to strengthen relationships with Illinois College alumni and families, deepening pride, involvement and philanthropic support that advances the College’s mission.

Flores will oversee alumni engagement initiatives including Homecoming, regional gatherings and campus traditions, highlighting the areas of campus that hold special meaning in the community. Flores will also direct the work of the Illinois College Alumni Association Board of Directors to support initiatives that drive alumni participation in student enrollment, employment and philanthropy.

In the months ahead, alumni can expect expanded opportunities to connect with IC through regional gatherings, campus traditions, mentoring, and renewed efforts to strengthen class-based reunion engagement.

Flores shared that the role was a professional and personal fit.

“This has always been a place that values meaningful connections and lifelong involvement,” Flores said. “Illinois College holds a special place in my family’s heart.”

A native of Long Beach, California, Flores earned her bachelor’s degree in communications and rhetorical studies with a minor in psychology from Illinois College in 2020. As a student, she played soccer and was an involved leader across campus, notably earning the William Jennings Bryan Professional Promise Award as a senior. She has served as the volunteer assistant women’s soccer coach at Illinois College for the past three years. She resides in Jacksonville with her husband, Anthony Flores ’20 and their daughter.

Emily Guest ’26 recognized with Lincoln Laureate honor

Emily Guest ’26 recognized with Lincoln Laureate honor

emily.titsworth

Wed, 11/19/2025 - 13:40

11.19.2025

Emily Guest ’26 has been named the College’s 2025 Lincoln Academy Student Laureate, recognized for her leadership, service and academic excellence. The statewide honor is awarded annually to one outstanding senior from each four-year college and university in Illinois.

 <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/highlights_large/public/2025-11/A1W07821.jpg?h=1148e630&itok=4Ef546AW" width="1201" height="620" alt="Emily Guest ’26 and President Barbara A.

Guest, a history and education double major from Nashville, Illinois, will graduate in May 2026 with secondary education licensure to teach grades 6–12. She says the honor came as a surprise and a reflection of how much she’s grown since her quiet first semester on campus.

“When I started college, I never would’ve thought I’d get an award for leadership,” Guest said. “I came here to play golf and earn my degree, but I ended up finding so much more. It means a lot that people noticed the effort I’ve put in to step outside my comfort zone.”

Guest’s Illinois College experience has been defined by involvement and mentorship. A four-year member of the women’s golf team, she also joined Alpha Phi Omega, the College’s co-ed service fraternity, where she’s held several leadership roles. She has also served as both an Involvement Leader and later the student director overseeing campus-wide Welcome Week events.

Her IC education has also taken her beyond the classroom. Guest participated in a Fulbright-Hays funded trip to Ecuador, where she and other education students and alumni gained firsthand experience in international education. She also interned last summer with the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield. There, she helped design new learning programs for students and assisted with community events such as Juneteenth celebrations and the Museum’s Back-to-School Bash.

“It was such a great opportunity to combine my love of history and teaching,” Guest said. “I worked on creating lessons for all grade levels, from early learners to high school students, and it really showed me how creative education can be.”

Guest credits Illinois College’s close-knit community and liberal arts approach with preparing her to Graduate READY for her future classroom.

“IC offers so many opportunities for students to grow,” she said. “The professors, the small campus, the connections you make, all of it helps you build confidence. I don’t think I would’ve branched out like this anywhere else.”

After graduation, Guest hopes to begin her teaching career, continuing her family’s tradition of service in education.
